TESLA S 400 miles on 1 charge

Postby jstack6 » Mon Aug 20, 2012 3:14 pm

Tesla has a challenge to see what new Tesla S owner can go voer 400 miles on 1 charge. Tesla rates the car at 300 miles at 70 mph so it may not be to hard. One of our EAA club members wants to beat it as soon as his new Tesla S gets here in mid Spet 2012. This could be lots of fun.

When we discussed it we figure it could take 4 or 5 days of average driving instead of just driving around all in a day to try and beat the record. At 55 mpg it would take 400/55= 7.2 hours , to beat the record it may have to be 30-40 mph so it's a long time. We'll see what works out and let you know.

That's sounds like a great contest! I can't wait to hear about the results.
Here's a test that I did. My normal commute is all freeway usually at 70-75mph. Commuting this way, the range on my MR2 is 70 miles on a full pack to 20% depth of charge. I did the same commute a few time driving only at 55 mph and the range from a full pack to 20% depth of charge increased to 90 miles! I think I will also test out the max range on my MR2 this way also. Sounds like fun. Anybody else want to join in on the fun with they EV's? What's your Leaf's max range, Jim?

My LEAF had a max range of about 140 miles on 1 charge when it was new on 3-17-2010 . Now because of the HEAT here in the Phoenix area and Nissan not having any active cooling I'm down to only about 110 miles. That's driving nice and easy in ECO mode on city streets.

Air Cond only takes about 5% range and REGEN helps on slight downhill areas and stop and go. The new 2013 LEAF is said to have about 10 miles per charge more range but they don't say anything about heat. My next EV will be a Tesla basic in 2015 or when they get them out and for sale at about $30K. I'd bet they will have 120-160 mile range. But by 2015 even the FORD FOUCUS will most likely have a solid 120 mile range and lower cost. With the great battery and controller cooling both FORD and Tesla have that will be the choice for hot area.

Lucky we only commute about 45 miles to and from work each day. Even with the heat loss of range we should be fine until the new basic Tesla is out. My best vehicle to use is my bicycle. I'd do that everyday if we had showers at work so I could clean up after my 22 mile 1 way commute. I do it many times a year but not 100%.

someone else did the Tesla challenge in Florida and went 428 miles on 1 charge.

My friend went 188.2 miles in his LEAF, cruis control set at min 23 mph,but he did it.

My FOCUS EV website shows a few who have gone over 200 miles in a FOCUS. I average about 100 on city streets.

New records all the time.
